The Art of Placement

Let the Furniture Breathe
One of the simplest ways to make a room feel larger and more sophisticated is to resist the temptation to push the sofa directly against the wall. Leaving even a small gap—around 10 inches or more—allows the furniture to visually breathe and creates a sense of depth around the seating area. This subtle adjustment makes the room feel less crowded, more intentional, and surprisingly more spacious. Instead of treating the walls as boundaries, think of the furniture as an element that floats within the room, creating a more inviting and balanced layout.

Light in Layers
A beautiful room rarely depends on just one light source. The secret to creating atmosphere is layering light at different levels: overhead lighting from a chandelier, ambient light from floor lamps, and intimate pools of light from table lamps. Each source illuminates the room from a different height and intensity, creating depth, warmth, and dimension. During the afternoon and into the evening, these layers allow you to shift the mood of the space—from bright and welcoming to soft and intimate—while also highlighting furniture, artwork, and architectural details.

Hang Art with Intention
A gallery wall should feel collected rather than randomly filled. The key is to think beyond a single eye-level line and use different heights to create movement. Position some artwork at eye level, place larger or more dramatic pieces above it, and bring smaller works lower toward furniture or even closer to the floor. This three-level approach creates visual rhythm and gives the eye a reason to travel throughout the space. The result is a gallery that feels layered, curated, and personal rather than overly symmetrical or predictable.
