How to Create a Zen Bedroom in 10 Easy Steps

Posted by

A Zen bedroom means more than just decorating with relaxing colors and decluttering your space. Sure, they’re part of the elements which help create a soothing effect and a relaxed atmosphere, but, to truly apply Zen principles in interior design you need to incorporate so much more. But what does Zen actually mean? Zen means meditation. In interior design, it reflects balance of mind, body and spirit.

1. Relaxing Colors

Color has the power to heal your spirit. Natural earth tones and soothing neutrals are essentials of a Zen bedroom. Adding soft blues and greens help to induce a sense of tranquility and harmony. And hints of red and black

2. Eliminate Clutter

Clutter can inhibit relaxation. The less-is-more aesthetic of a Zen interior includes open, uncluttered spaces. Clear your room of as many items as possible and keep only the essentials and items which help with relaxation.

3. Lighting

Research has proven lighting has an effect on a person’s mood. Sunlight is a natural, positive source of energy during the day. Rice-paper shades, light colored curtains and shoji screens give the room as much natural light as possible. You can add light to darker areas of the room through the use of mirrors.

4. Simple Furniture

Furniture with earthy, natural tones of wood ranging from light golden blonde to tan, brown, reddish brown or brownish black bring a sense of warmth and relaxation. Pieces with built-in, hidden storage to minimize clutter. A platform bed with a low-rise design and simple, clean lines.

5. Layout

The room's layout sets up its functional design and plays a role in attaining balance. If the arrangement of furnishings to each other is not symmetrical, you will feel out of sorts. While an entirely symmetrical layout appears very neat, it can appear a little boring. At the other end of the scale, a room with no symmetry whatsoever can appear chaotic and visually jarring. Create the perfect balance by combining symmetry and asymmetry. For example, arrange a pair of symmetrical side tables next to your bed with table lamps of different heights.

You should also consider the function of any given space to determine the arrangement of furnishings. For example, leave room entrances and exits clear and avoid placing large furnishings in front of windows, where they may block natural light.

6. Comfortable Mattress

Comfort is key. The most critical comfort component of any bedroom is the bed itself. The right mattress can really help one have a good night's sleep and wake up feeling rested and refreshed. Sleeping on the wrong mattress can cause sleeplessness and overall aches and pains. Invest in a mattress that provides the optimum support and pressure relief as well as one big enough to give you and or your partner room to move freely.

7. Simple Decorations

Although accessories such as wall art and decorative accents typically are kept to a minimum, simple decor in natural materials and colors play a role in attaining a spiritual or meditative atmosphere. Including a praying or meditating Buddha with both hands in a meditative pose enhances the serenity of a Zen bedroom.

8. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. For example, lavender is a well-known remedy to anxiety. If you want the therapeutic benefit of essential oils, don’t heat them as it alters them and takes away some of their benefits. Simply put it in a diffuser or vaporizer.

9. No TV or Computer

Electronic devices are a source of distraction and are more stimulating than calming and therefore do not fit well in a Zen atmosphere. If you have a TV or computer in your sacred space, the tendency is it will become an entertainment room instead of a quiet place where you can unwind.

10. Plants

The effect of nature in the home serves to improve people’s moods and reduce stress levels. Not only is their natural aesthetic beauty soothing, but, the smell of certain flowers can improved your mental health. For example, Jasmine has a positive effect on the quality of sleep one gets, decreasing anxiety and improving the attitude one has after waking up. Place it on an oriental planter and display it on top of a planter stand to add to the Zen ambiance. If you prefer plants without a scent, Bonsai trees make a good choice and are often part of a Zen bedroom.

Now Sit Back, Relax & Meditate

Once you’ve created your Zen sanctuary, take a moment to sit quietly, empty your mind and focusing on your breathing. This is the reward for your hard work. Ahhhh. So nice!
